Why Did We Come?

by Carol Ann Scott,
Class of 1960.

Why did we come
From so far away,
Recalling our childhood,
Our studies and play?

Was it partly to look
In the mirror of our friends-
To recapture our hiistory,
Our stories to blend?

We know stories unspoken,
We know things that we've done -
Some better not mentioned,
And the plain, good old fun.

The laughter and tears
In the school's hallowed halls,
Send echoes in memory
Unbounded by walls.

Report cards and track meets
And basketball games,
School dances (and crushes),
And our teenager "flames" -

Walking the hills
'Round Shawinigan High,
And hikes by the river,
And friendships we tied -

And now we've returned
To look in the eyes,
Of those who once knew us
For youth never lied -

Because who we've become
Came out of our past -
Did our values and ethics
Erode or last?

This is more than a walk
Down memory's long lane -
It's our spirits rekindled
And our purpose reclaimed.
